when space shuttle program began, mocrs re-designated flight control rooms (fcr, pronounced ficker ); , fcr 1 (formerly mocr 1) became first shuttle control room. fcr 2 used classified department of defense shuttle flights, remodeled apollo-era configuration. moment space shuttle cleared launch tower in florida until landed on earth, in hands of mission control. when shuttle mission underway, control room staffed around clock, in 3 shifts.
in 1992, jsc began building extension building 30. new five-story section (30 south) went operational in 1998 , houses 2 flight control rooms, designated white, , blue. white fcr used in tandem fcr 2 7 shuttle missions, sts-70 through sts-76, , handled following shuttle flights through end of program. when not in use shuttle program, white fcr reconfigured backup iss fcr time time needed (such during periods of construction or upgrades in iss fcr).
