located on yuan river upstream junction lake dongting system, changde natural center of northwest hunan plain. city historically situated on north bank of yuan river, , has since expanded development south of river. chinese phrase 三山三水 (literally 3 mountains , 3 rivers ) used in reference general physical geography of city. around city 3 nearby mountains- taiyang mountain (太阳山) north, mount de (德山) south, , mount hefu (河洑山) in west. in addition yuan river, city has plentiful water resources chuanzi , xin rivers both flowing through wuling urban district. other major geographic feature of area liuye lake (柳叶湖), northeast of city center. there numerous lakes, ponds, , streams in city although many have been diverted or buried.


the larger prefecture-level city of changde adjacent dongting lake east, city of yiyang south, wuling , xuefeng mountains west, , hubei province north. near border hubei province in shimen county huping mountain (壶瓶山), highest peaks in hunan province altitude of 2,099 metres (6,886 ft).


the xuefeng , wuling mountains have historically been part of native habitat of south china tiger. species critically endangered , believed extinct in wild. in recent years, chinese government has worked identify potential sites establishment of tiger reserve reintroduction of captive-born tigers wild. hupingshan-houhe national natural reserve complex in shimen county selected 1 of several potential sites.

it has monsoon-influenced, four-season humid subtropical climate (köppen cfa), cool, damp winters, , hot, humid summers. winter begins relatively dry not sunny , becomes progressively damper , cloudier; spring brings frequent rain , highest humidity levels of year. summer comparatively sunny, while autumn dry. monthly 24-hour average temperatures ranges 4.7 °c (40.5 °f) in january 28.6 °c (83.5 °f) in july, while annual mean 16.92 °c (62.5 °f). annual precipitation 1,320 mm (52 in). monthly percent possible sunshine ranging 22% in february , march 53% in july, city receives 1,602 hours of bright sunshine annually.
