squire boone

in 1730, squire boone, daniel boone s father, built log cabin in oley valley in berks county near present-day reading. daniel boone born in  1 ⁄2-story log house. 1 wall built of native stone. basement of house served springhouse. provided easy access water cleaning, cooking , drinking. springhouse useful cold storage.


squire boone expanded property in 1741 when purchased 25 acres (100,000 m) of land use pasture dairy cattle. squire boone blacksmith , weaver. responsibility tending cattle given daniel. during summer months stayed in rustic cabin @ edge of pasture. there able protect cattle predators such black bear, bobcat, , mountain lions.


the boone family became source of controversy in local quaker community. in 1742, boone s parents compelled publicly apologize after eldest child sarah married non-quaker. when boone s oldest brother israel married non-quaker in 1747, squire boone stood son , therefore expelled quakers, although wife continued attend monthly meetings children. perhaps result of controversy, in 1750 squire sold land , moved family south. boones settled on yadkin river, in davie county, north carolina, 2 miles (3 km) west of mocksville.

ownership of daniel boone homestead transferred in 1750 william maugridge, relative of boones philadelphia , associate of benjamin franklin. shipwright , carpenter. home underwent expansion either before or after time transferred maugridge. addition created 2 story house. house featured typical hall , parlor bible closet .


maugridge died in 1766 , property purchased john deturk. deturk remodeled house completely. removed walls of log cabin , had them rebuilt stone. deturk may have built smokehouse can seen today @ park. several other farmers owned land in years following deturk s death before effort preserve historical purposes undertaken in 1926.

the wayside lodge @ daniel boone homestead. built in 1940.


the reverend a. b. vossler of nearby birdsboro, pennsylvania purchased farm of william c. foote of east orange, new jersey in 1926. later sold commonwealth of pennsylvania in 1937 in order preserve , protect homestead of daniel boone. restoration began afterward , many examples of colonial life in oley valley have been moved site of daniel boone homestead. circa 1769 blacksmith s shop has been restored @ park bertolet house, example of 18th-century pennsylvania german architecture.
