in 19th century, small high-quality marble deposits discovered in rutland, , in 1830s large deposit of solid marble of high quality found in west rutland. 1840s small firms had begun operations, marble quarries became profitable when railroad came rutland in 1851. @ same time, famous quarries of carrara in tuscany, italy, became largely unworkable because of extreme depth, , rutland became 1 of leading producers of marble in world.
this fueled enough growth , investment in 1886 marble companies saw when present rutland city incorporated village, of town split off west rutland , proctor, between them contained bulk of marble quarries. proctor formed around nucleus of old sutherland falls parts of rutland , pittsford. proctor named , owned senator redfield proctor. closing of marble quarries in town in 1980s , 1990s cost area many jobs, , proctor has struggled more neighbors. in 2004 proctor marble arch bridge restoration project recipient of marble institute award of merit commitment preservation of original stonework.
