the planet peladon, led young king, on verge of joining galactic federation, delegates ready make final decision. high priest hepesh opposed change, warning curse of aggedor royal beast of peladon visit doom upon them all.


the tardis materialises on edge of cliff below castle. doctor , jo grant barely leave ship before tumbles on edge of cliff; climb castle help.


king peladon asks hepesh s support join federation, hepesh says not trust aliens. doctor , jo discovered palace guards, take them throne room, delegates gathered: alpha centauri, arcturus, ice lord izlyr , ice warrior ssorg. doctor mistaken delegate earth. introduces jo princess josephine of tardis , neutral royal observer earth.


several suspicious accidents occur delegates, jo links ice warriors. fleeing beast aggedor, discovers in tunnels under palace, doctor finds way room holds shrine of aggedor, discovered hepesh , grun, king s champion. hepesh accuses doctor of sacrilege entering shrine. sentenced trial combat, duel death king s champion.


in doctor s cell, hepesh tells doctor shuttle has been recovered , offers him escape route. in tunnels, doctor encounters beast again, , uses hypnosis calm it.


the doctor tries tell king beast, hepesh orders doctor taken away face grun in combat. doctor victorious, , spares grun s life. arcturus tries kill doctor shot ssorg. others realise hepesh has been framing ice warriors, , has trained rare beast maintain superstition. made agreement arcturus peladon s mineral deposits in exchange help. eventually, delegates vote unanimously intervention. however, unable communicate vote ships, communicators in rooms have been smashed.


hepesh s forces have taken throne room, , hold king hostage. hepesh tells king live, long goes old ways. doctor arrives aggedor, kills hepesh before doctor manages call off.


the doctor realises time lords must have steered tardis here, ship still not within control. peladon asks jo stay, protests not real princess. not matter him. doctor , jo going coronation see real delegate earth, has arrived. rush tardis avoid explaining themselves.
