granted on november 9, 1780, warren chartered on october 20, 1789, john throop , 67 others. named dr. joseph warren, revolutionary war patriot. first settlers, samuel lard , seth leavitt, arrived in 1797. mills built on mad river grind grain or manufacture lumber , clapboards. on fertile intervales, farmers grew hay. 1839, when town s population 766, cattle , 4000 sheep grazed hills. milk , maple syrup important goods.


a ski resort developed here in 20th century. began in late 1930s first ski tow established in mad river valley, erected warren outing club. in 1958, damon gadd , jack murphy founded sugarbush ski area on northeast side of lincoln peak. three-seat gondola installed, @ time nation s longest lift, had been manufactured in italy. evolved today sugarbush resort.
