the site built experimental over-the-horizon radar station known cobra mist.
the radar never worked satisfactorily , project scrapped in 1973. site , buildings taken on in 1975 foreign , commonwealth office s communications engineering department (still better known previous name, diplomatic wireless service), installed 50-kw medium-wave broadcast transmitter. following successful tests , installation of further transmitters, 1978 site gradually took on responsibility bbc s medium-wave services europe had been provided since second world war fco transmitting station @ crowborough in sussex. september 1982, orfordness handled such bbc transmissions. in 1986, bbc took on running of site fco, although latter retained ownership of station.
in 1997, part of privatization of transmitting stations in uk used bbc, station bought merlin communications international ltd (usually known merlin), company formed former bbc engineers , frequency managers. in 2001, merlin acquired vt group plc (known vosper thorneycroft until 2002) , renamed vt merlin communications, vt communications. in 2010, vt communications bought babcock.
