history
celts , romans

witnessing prehistoric human presence many barrows , sporadic finds, of go stone age. roman times come parts of so-called jupiter columns (or jupitergigantensäulen in german) , other worship stones. show, many traces of roman country houses (villae rusticae) in heights around mömlingen, extent of once mighty roman empire, few kilometres away east held frontier @ “wet limes”, namely main.


frankish settlement

an frankish settlement beginning in 6th century in heart of community witnessed extensive row grave field unearthed archaeologists west of village. besides many graves scanty or missing grave goods, graves extraordinarily rich appointments discovered, such mainz gold coin , remnants of silk, leading conclusion there stately noble class among villagers. these nobles have driven frankish taking of land on royal orders.


first documentary mention

the settlement crops in written records miminingen in document imperial abbey @ fulda issued sometime between 802 , 817 (abbot ratgar’s time in office). compared many neighbouring communities, first documentary mention.

church , nobility – mainz , breuberg

from middle ages, many ecclesiastical institutions , members of upper , middle nobility known had holdings in municipal area, imposed taxes , held sundry rights. in 1024, emperor heinrich ii donated county of stockstadt, within lay mömlingen, imperial abbey @ fulda. in 1278, place passed county of bachgau electoral mainz. circumstances of mömlingen’s belonging politically (until 1803) electoral mainz tithing region of bachgau while village jurisdiction, extensive landholdings , further traditional entitlements held lords @ nearby breuberg castle led neverending disputes between territorial overlords of mainz , breuberg.

in late middle ages, members of a, probably, lower noble family named “von mimling” (among other spellings) began cropping in documents, clergymen , tithe counts. historical research leaves no doubt forebears of famous painter hans memling, born 1435 in seligenstadt, came mömlingen. works can found hanging in world’s famous painting galleries.


hausen hinter der sonne

south of mömlingen, on north slope of buchberg, once stood village of hausen hinter der sonne (the affix meaning “behind sun”), belonging bishopric of bamberg. great countrywide wave of plague swept across land in 1348 may have thoroughly decimated inhabitants, little settlement died in 16th century when last few inhabitants moved mömlingen, under effects of war. mömlingen’s municipal area thereby grew considerably. neighbouring hainstadt gained land area small village’s death.


thirty years’ war , aftermath

information mömlingen’s size in late middle ages can drawn interest register 1426. @ time, counts of wertheim, holders of lordship of breuberg, taxing 62 farms. hence, mömlingen quite grand place. grave effects on mömlingen’s development brought thirty years war (1618–1648). plague, sacking , pillaging harried people, leaving few survivors 1650. many longtime families had been taken away dreadful war. after war ended, many new names come forth archives. newcomers arrived south tyrol, france , netherlands.


the thirty years war thwarted building of new local church. in 1774-1777 plan realized. old parish church built in baroque style said community’s landmark.


mömlingen passes bavaria

with onset of 19th century, epoch had lasted more 600 years came end when mömlingen ceased part of electoral mainz’s once vast holdings. in 1803 passed newly formed principality of aschaffenburg, passed in 1814 (by 1810 had become department of grand duchy of frankfurt) bavaria.


today community of mömlingen, since second world war has undergone great growth through building, presents lower centre has @ disposal colourful pallet of not-for-profit institutions, , scenically charming location treasured many visitors.
