in 19th century farming became less economic when construction of reservoirs reduced amount of agricultural land in village. weaving industry mechanised, small mines closed , population declined further when properties in village demolished in 20th century. agriculture, sheep farming, continues although on small scale. tourism @ rivington began in victorian times , after reservoirs filled in 1860s known little lake district. rivington became popular destination when lever park opened in 1904. late victorian period until mid-20th century tourists bolton travelled on day trips tram along chorley new road , on rivington on foot, many more visitors arrived train.


today thousands of visitors attracted village, rivington pike , lever park every year, making tourism significant source of income in area. go ape operates outdoor activity centre in country park.
