smith signed undrafted free agent los angeles rams following 1973 nfl draft. @ beginning of 1973 season, rams released smith, , attempted re-sign him 1974 season. smith did not re-sign them, because knew rams receivers coming following season, , lance rentzel after being suspended season.


philadelphia eagles

smith thought have better chance @ making philadelphia eagles team, , signed them. eagles wide receiver harold carmichael, attended southern university, smith s rival in college due teams playing in same conference. eagles defensive end ricky harris played smith @ grambling state.


in 1974, smith returned 4 punts seven yards , did not catch passes. in 1975, smith became eagles starting wide receiver alongside carmichael. smith caught 37 passes 515 yards , 6 touchdowns in first season starter. rushed 85 yards on 9 carries. in 1976, smith caught 27 passes 412 yards , 4 touchdowns. had 9 carries 25 yards , 1 touchdown. in 1977, smith made 33 receptions 464 yards , 4 touchdowns. had 2 carries 13 yards. in 1978, caught 11 passes 142 yards , 2 touchdowns. made 24 catches 399 yards , 1 touchdown in 1979.


in 1980, smith had best season of career, hauling in 47 passes 825 yards , 3 touchdowns. rushed 5 times 33 yards. in super bowl xv against oakland raiders, smith caught 2 passes 59 yards. in final season in 1981, smith made 38 receptions 564 yards , 4 touchdowns, along 2 rushes five yards.
