in greek new testament, judas called Ὶούδας Ὶσκάριωθ or Ὶσκαριώτης. judas (spelled ioudas (Ιούδας) in ancient greek , iudas in latin, pronounced yudas in both) greek form of common name judah (יהודה, yhûdâh, hebrew god praised ). greek spelling underlies other names in new testament traditionally rendered differently in english: judah , jude. significance of iscariot uncertain. there several major theories on etymology:
