in august 1950, cia, @ direction of national security council, formed delaware corporation named airdale. airdale formed subsidiary corporation named cat, inc. cat purchased 40% of assets of civil air transport (cat), airline had been started in china in 1946 gen claire lee chennault (of flying tigers fame) , whiting willauer. sixty percent remained chinese investors. cat inc. formed asiatic aeronautical company ltd, republic of china company.


in 1957 airdale changed name pacific corporation. cat, inc. changed name air america, inc. in 1959 after settling objections air france. asiatic aeronautical company, ltd changed name air asia company, ltd same year. civil air transport remained in existence throughout tenure of air america 1950 through 1976, , several years flag carrier republic of china. status lost after landing accident , china airlines became flag carrier. civil air transport became ticketing company used inter-company travel.
