History Cypress Park, Los Angeles
the land on cypress park occupies first settled tongva tribe of shoshone native americans. when gaspar de portolà , expedition first encountered los angeles river in august 1769 , described area of confluence of arroyo seco “a lush green valley”. pueblo de los angeles later founded adjacent location.
the area granted rancho san rafael jose maria verdugo in october 1784. in 1859, julio verdugo sold southern tip of rancho jessie d. hunter, had first arrived in los angeles in 1847 captain in mormon battalion during mexican-american war. hunter had acquired rancho cañada de los nogales, contains of present-day glassell park. hunter had established first kiln-fired brickyard in los angeles, sold , took farming when acquired rancho land.
after hunter’s death land subdivided hunter tract and, in 1882, cypress park became first of arroyo seco communities come existence, predating highland park 3 years.
