uss aldebaran (af-10) in 1960.


for next 2 decades, aldebaran alternated between assignments mediterranean sea , operations in western atlantic. unlike other ships attached 6th fleet, did not serve extended periods of time in mediterranean. instead, cruises tended 6 ten weeks in duration, , made 2 or 3 of them year. remain in mediterranean long retained sufficient stock of provisions issue. when stocks began run low, aldebaran. returned united states. turnaround time @ home varied. scheduled overhauls meant extended periods in united states. in addition, other resupply missions, such forces operating in west indies, replaced voyages mediterranean on schedule. occasional interludes in northern european waters varied aldebaran s itinerary.


twice during postwar career, aldebaran participated in operations received armed forces expeditionary medal. during summer of 1958, united states landed marines in lebanon restore domestic order in country. stores ship got underway norfolk 4 days after landings provide logistics services ships supporting troops. 4 years later, in fall of 1962, president john f. kennedy surrounded island of cuba cordon of warships stop flow of soviet missiles island , force removal of in place. aldebaran s at-sea replenishment capabilities helped ships maintain constant vigil thereby contributing successful conclusion of matter.


aldebaran continued active service united states naval forces in mediterranean sea , in west indies until mid-1968. on 28 june 1968, placed out of commission @ norfolk. 4 months later, on 29 october, aldebaran transferred maritime administration berthed national defense reserve fleet @ james river, virginia. transfer made permanent on 30 june 1969. aldebaran s name struck navy list on 1 june 1973, , sold on 14 november 1974 andy international, brownsville, texas, scrapping.
