numbering scheme

stable , oldstable minor updates, called point releases; of june 2017, stable release version 9.0, , oldstable release version 8.8.

the numbering scheme point releases debian 4.0 include letter r (for revision) after main version number , number of point release; example, latest point release of version 4.0 4.0r9. scheme chosen because new dotted version make old 1 obsolete , vendors have trouble selling cds.

from debian 5.0, numbering scheme of point releases changed, conforming gnu version numbering standard; first point release of debian 5.0 5.0.1 instead of 5.0r1. numbering scheme once again changed first debian 7 update, version 7.1. r scheme no longer in use, point release announcements include note not throwing away old cds.

code names

the code names of debian releases names of characters toy story films. debian 9 named stretch after toy rubber octopus in toy story 3. debian 8 named jessie, after cowgirl in toy story 2 , toy story 3. testing branch named buster, real (not toy) dog seen in toy story 2 , 3. debian 11 called bullseye , woody s toy horse. unstable trunk permanently nicknamed sid, after emotionally unstable boy next door regularly destroyed toys.

this naming tradition came because bruce perens involved in development of debian while working @ pixar.

blends

debian pure blends subsets of debian release configured out-of-the-box users particular skills , interests. example, debian jr. made children, while debian science researchers , scientists. complete debian distribution includes available debian pure blends. debian blend (without pure ) term debian-based distribution strives become part of mainstream debian, , have features included in future releases.
