22 march: 1 usaf f-15e flying aviano crashed in bu marim, northwest of benghazi. pilot rescued alive marines 26th marine expeditionary unit based on uss kearsarge. weapons systems officer evaded hostile forces , subsequently repatriated undisclosed forces. aircraft crashed due mechanical failure. rescue operation involved 2 bell-boeing v-22 osprey aircraft, 2 sikorsky ch-53 sea stallion helicopters, , 2 mcdonnell douglas av-8b harrier ii aircraft, launched uss kearsarge. operation involved harriers dropping 227 kg (500 lb) bombs , strafing area around crash site before osprey recovered @ least 1 of downed aircraft s crew; injuring 6 local civilians in process.
27 april: f-16 united arab emirates air force crashed @ naval air station sigonella @ 11:35 local time; pilot ejected safely. aircraft confirmed uae country s general command of armed forces, , had been arriving sardinia when crashed.
21 june: unmanned navy mq-8 fire scout went down on libya, possibly due enemy fire. nato confirmed lost radar contact unmanned helicopter performing intelligence , reconnaissance mission near zliten. nato began investigating crash shortly after occurred. on 5 august, announced investigation had concluded cause of crash enemy fire; operator or mechanical failure ruled out , inability of investigators access crash site logical conclusion aircraft had been shot down.
20 july: british airman killed in traffic accident in italy while part of logistical convoy transferring supplies uk nato bases in south of italy air strikes being conducted against libya.
