founding (1993–98)
debian first announced on august 16, 1993, ian murdock, called system debian linux release . word debian formed portmanteau of first name of then-girlfriend debra lynn , own first name. before debian s release, softlanding linux system (sls) had been popular linux distribution , basis slackware. perceived poor maintenance , prevalence of bugs in sls motivated murdock launch new distribution.
