Geography Rivington
rivington situated on moorland fringe between high unenclosed moorland of west pennine moors , fields below. landscape characterised marginal pastures isolated farmsteads, reservoirs , disused mines , quarries scattered across hillsides. there extensive network of footpaths providing public access. reservoir valleys dominated expanses of water , victorian gothic architecture of dams , embankments surrounded woodland.
to east of rivington rivington pike , west flatter land of lancashire plain. rivington north of horwich , bolton , south of anglezarke moor , yarrow reservoir. west of village wide shallow valley containing anglezarke, upper , lower rivington reservoirs. village accessed west road on top of 876-foot (267 m) long horrobin embankment, dam separates upper , lower rivington reservoirs. river douglas has source on winter hill, , flows in southwest direction forming part of southern boundary. river yarrow has source on anglezarke moor , forms northern boundary. area of township 2,768 acres (11.20 km), reservoirs , filter beds occupy 275 acres (1.11 km).
the underlying geology millstone grit overlaid coal measures. gritstone quarried building stone in area. around rivington chalybeate springs , in dean wood waterfall descent of 32 feet (9.8 m).
