august 25, 1974: nolan ryan of california angels struck out sandy alomar of yankees 1500th strikeout of career. ryan , alomar had been teammates @ beginning of season, alomar had been sold yankees on july 8.
september 7, 1974: yankees graig nettles hit home run against detroit tigers. next time up, hit broken-bat single. tigers catcher bill freehan scrambled 6 superballs came bouncing out. nettles called out on single, solo homer allowed , made difference yankees won 1–0.

hall of fame

mickey mantle , former teammate whitey ford elected baseball hall of fame in 1974, mantle in first year of eligibility, ford in second. ford s number 16 retired well. although ford wore number 19 in rookie season, following return army in 1953, wore number 16 remainder of career.
