india has 100,087 km (62,191 mi) of national highways (nh) connecting major cities , state capitals of june 2016. national highways comprise 1.7% of india s total road network, carry 40% of road traffic. of them have 2 lanes. 26,000 km (16,000 mi) have been widened 4 lanes 2 lanes in each direction of may 2016. few national highways built cement concrete. of 2010, 19,064 km (11,846 mi) of national highways still single-laned roads. government working ensure december 2014 entire national highway network consists of roads 2 or more lanes.


india has distinction of having world s second highest-altitude motor highway— leh-manali highway, connecting shimla leh in ladakh, kashmir.


national highways form economic backbone of country , have facilitated development along routes, , many new towns have sprung along major highways. highways have large numbers of small restaurants , inns (known dhabas) along length. serve popular local cuisine , serve truck stops.


ministry of road transport , highways, government of india adopted new systematic numbering of national highways in april 2010. new system indicate direction of national highways whether east-west (odd numbers) or north-south (even numbers) , geographical region located, increasing east west , north south.
