leesha thirteen-year-old girl lives abusive mother , downtrodden father. after slanderous rumor spread fiancé seems destroy chances of respectable marriage , shows true nature of many of friends , hypocrisy of villagers, devotes herself learning ways of herb gathering care sick.

rojer enters narrative toddler, member of family survive coreling attack. rescued , adopted alcoholic jongleur, type of roaming jester travels messengers , performs in villages on messenger s route. rojer has crippled hand, caused loss of 2 fingers in coreling attack killed parents. limits ability juggle not hinder him in least when plays favorite instrument, fiddle. later remembers jongleur adopted him caused death of mother, confronts him on road later, , jongleur, in fit of drunken rage, pushes him corelings. sees mistake, , dies in order save rojer s life. fiddle rojer can entrance corelings music causing corelings follow him, anger them rage, make them oblivious others, or drive them away jarring music. rojer tries without success teach others skills fiddle. rojer harbors strong unrequited feelings leesha.
