south african coins issued between 1965 , 1988


a revised coinage series introduced 1965. denominations included  ⁄2, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 , 50 cents. silver replaced in coins cupronickel.


initially coinage bore portrait of van riebeeck, , later state presidents or south african coat of arms. country name given in afrikaans, english or both.  ⁄2 cent coin discontinued in 1970s.


the gold rand coins minted until 1983. starting in 1967, however, gradually replaced krugerrand coins, after issue of smaller krugerrand denominations 0.1 0.5 oz in 1980.
