the fifth dalai lama, instrumental in enlarging dorjezha monastery
dorjezha monastery, situated on hilltop, blends rock setting , named after rock known vraja, green coloured gemstones found behind monastery. literal meaning of ‘dorjezha’ “diamond hill.” built on modest lines, on right bank of yarlung river wealthy local man known doxie dorje. monastery destroyed in 1717 during zungar invasion of area. was, however, rebuilt in 1718. further, monastery supported fifth dalai lama , consequently, underwent major improvements , became 1 of famous monasteries of tibet. @ peak of popularity 2000 monks of nyingma sect resided here; holds distinction of being known ancestral monastery of sakyapa sect. substantially damaged during cultural revolution. however, rebuilt in 1978. @ present, 29 monks reside here, , of them gonggar county, except 1 monk renbo county of shigatse prefecture. management system established democratic, each individual member of management commission made responsible particular tasks such religious activities, finance , daily matters. maintains close interaction choqin monastery (dege county in sichuan province) of nyigma sect , both follow same teaching , practicing of buddhist tenets. in monastery, practice of “reincarnation of living buddha” followed , hence has name of renchenqinmo dorjeza jambeilobsam gyinmeinamzogyacho , present living buddha 10th reincarnation in lineage, , result monastery has huge reputation among adherents of tibetan buddhism.

a large statue of mao zedong has been installed in gonggar county in gonggar town. statue erected contributions made people of hunan province, mao born. statue, erected in honour of chairman mao, in gratitude people of hometown. statue erected on 5.16 metres (16.9 ft) pedestal 7.1 metres (23 ft) tall , weighs 35 tonnes , made in granite. cost 480,000 yuan (us$60,000).
