smith s trial began @ leicester crown court on 3 july 2001, pleaded not guilty 3 murder charges. case prosecuted tim raggatt, qc, , smith defended rachel brand, qc. on opening day of trial raggatt told court there powerful , compelling scientific evidence linking smith killings. smith s defence traces of blood found on clothes there because police had tampered evidence, while trousers belonging rosemary corcoran found @ flat had been among bag of clothes smith had stolen outside oxfam shop.


on 17 july smith complained of feeling unwell chest , eye pain while under cross-examination, , proceedings briefly halted while treated symptoms of panic attack. when smith returned witness stand, said wished speak barrister. presiding judge rafferty told him must answer questions, smith replied: want change plea. m fed this. want change plea. charges read him again following day, , pleaded guilty. on 18 july 2001 smith sentenced life imprisonment. in january 2005 birmingham s sunday mercury newspaper reported smith had decided change plea after police agreed return £400 confiscated him during raid on flat after arrest, , wanted money buy mars bars in prison.


passing sentence, rafferty said: robbed 3 innocent ladies of lives. suspect families suffer more don t understand why did. brutality of these ladies deaths, designed evade discovery, showing coldness dispatched them, appalling. should have faced man @ overwhelming nature of crown s case against chose put victims families through misery compounded trial. motive smith s actions remained unclear after trial, police believed lack of permanent sexual relations had been contributing factor.
