the story of foundation of hallows school must set against rudimentary pioneer education system , bitter sectarian disputes in queensland education during 1850s , 1860s. according johnston, until 1860 secondary education tended receive low priority in state thinking – not surprising since provision of primary level difficult, difficult manage . continues: there no state initiatives provide own system until 1912. secondary education, seen perquisite of middle-class life, suitable children of business , professional men , established pastoralists, allowed offered private , church bodies.


queensland historian ross fitzgerald points out until twentieth century majority of (queensland catholics) ... belonged lower socio-economic groups .

in 1863, pupils , sisters growing in numbers, realised suitable place convent must found. envisaged small house of mercy established on site of become hallows school. 1 november 1863 saw transfer of party small structure adjacent saint stephen s cathedral adderton house overlooking brisbane river high upon duncan s hill.
