new coinage introduced beginning r2 denomination (initially known colloquially de klerk ), adding r5 coin, , replacing denominations of previous coinage. coins bore coat of arms , name of country in english , afrikaans. after 1996, coins carried name in 1 of country s 11 new official languages. 10, 20 , 50 cent coins redesigned enlarging numerals of coin s denomination. 2000 coins carried south africa s new coat of arms. 2002, r1, r2 , r5 coins carried country s name in 2 of official languages.


minting of 1c , 2c coins ceased @ end of march 2002. minting of 5c coin ceased on 1 april 2012, , 10c coin, minted in bronze-plated steel, has since been minted in copper-plated steel. 5c coins still legal tender, have more or less disappeared circulation, , transactions rounded nearest 10c.


a bi-metallic r5 coin added security features, including grooved edge , micro-lettering on reverse, introduced in 2004.
