between january , may 1829, napier fitted experimental system of own design of paddles crew work via winches on main deck. paddles proved useful manoeuvering @ speeds of 3 knots in windless conditions. on 12 september 1831 galatea towed line-of-battle ship caledonia means of paddles alone. between december 1829 , february 1830 underwent refit cost ₤12,595.
twice during period cruised caribbean, calling @ jamaica, havana, cuba , tampico, mexico. between august , october 1830 sent lisbon demand restitution of british merchantmen had been seized government of portuguese usurper dom miguel, , in may–july 1831 engaged in guarding british interests in azores when forces of dom pedro engaged in recovering islands rightful queen, donna maria ii. napier quit galatea in 1832 after paid off , succeeded george sartorius commander of dom pedro s navy in february 1833.
