the 164th infantry regiment landed on guadalcanal on 13 october 1942, ahead of brother regiments, emergency reinforcement 1st marine division. regiment first u.s. army unit engage in offensive action during world war ii part of battle of guadalcanal. between 24 , 27 october, elements of regiment withstood repeated assaults japanese battalions , inflicted 2 thousand enemy casualties; 164th supported , participated in marine attacks. first marine division s commander, major general a. a. vandegrift, impressed soldiers stand issued unit commendation regiment having demonstrated overwhelming superiority on enemy. in addition, general vandegrift took unusual step of awarding lt. colonel robert hall, commander of 3rd battalion, 164th, navy cross role in these battles. 164th referred 164th marines due special relationship marines on guadalcanal.


in november 164th took part in offensive across matanikau river. other elements of division arrived piecemeal in last few weeks of 1942.


in january 1943, 132nd infantry regiment of division took hill 27 , 31 of mount austen complex. division later participated in offensives sweep guadalcanal of remaining japanese resistance. after last japanese defenders killed, captured, or evacuated island, division relieved on 9 february 1943.


despite ad-hoc formation, americal division fought @ guadalcanal. 164th regiment took part in repulsing major japanese offensive in october 1942, while 132nd regiment, along 25th infantry division assaulted highly fortified japanese gifu defensive complex @ mount austen in january 1943. historians describe americal division effective of army divisions in conflict. following withdrawal of 1st marine division, division continued operations on guadalcanal part of u.s. xiv corps 25th infantry division (who later earned tropic lightning nickname here) , 2nd marine division (arrived earlier reinforcements 1st mardiv) until of japanese resistance had ended.
