g. ruricola host organism 2 species of flies in genus drosophila. first observed on montserrat henry guernsey hubbard in 1894, , presented @ scientific meeting later year (where crab misidentified cardisoma guanhumi), no further research conducted until 1955, when specimens again collected, time mona island, , named drosophila carcinophila m. r. wheeler.


in 1967, second species of fly, drosophila endobranchia discovered on gecarcinus ruricola, although inhabits closely related species gecarcinus lateralis. drosohila endrobranchia not closely related d. carcinophila, , trait appears therefore have evolved convergently. (a third species of fly, lissocephala powelli has evolved similar habit on christmas island, lives on land crabs gecarcoidea lalandii, geograpsus crinipes , cardisoma carnifex, , terrestrial hermit crab birgus latro.) d. endobranchia evolved group of species breed on fungi or bark, while d. carcinophila evolved group breed on cacti.


the flies spend of lives on crab, , reluctant leave. not need flee predators, because crabs inhabit fast animals , flee:



the flies … hardly move @ all, extremely reluctant in leaving host crabs , hard pushed take flight. although flies sluggish, crabs on reside but. chasing after crabs through pitch-black jungle (growing on razor sharp labyrinthine limestone ground), while trying aspirate flies carapaces not trivial. obtaining large amounts of flies in way nightmare.



the eggs laid around crab s compound eyes, , first instar larvae hatch eggs migrate crab s nephritic pad, , live there, feeding on microbes cleanse crab s urine. second instar spent in crab s gill chamber. third instar sees larvae return mouthparts before falling ground pupate.
