the division reactivated 25 september 1967 @ chu lai in vietnam combination of units in vietnam , newly arrived units. precursor, division-sized task force known task force oregon created in quảng ngãi , quảng tín provinces 3rd brigade of 25th infantry division, 1st brigade of 101st airborne division, , 196th light infantry brigade (all separate brigades deployed vietnam in 1966). task force oregon operated in close cooperation 1st marine division in corps military region. more army units arrived in vietnam 2 divisional brigades released parent organizations , 2 arriving separate brigades assigned task force oregon, in turn re-designated 23rd infantry division (americal). division composed of 11th, 196th, , 198th light infantry brigades , divisional support units. both 11th , 198th brigades newly formed units.


the americal, in vietnam, suffered important defeat @ battle of kham duc gave solid performance during tet offensive, battle of lo giang , battle of nui hoac ridge (hill 352). platoon sergeant finnis mccleery awarded medal of honor valiant efforts on hill 352. sgt. alan allen awarded silver star same battle. both men members of co. 1/6 198th. 20 men company lost in battle of logiang on 8 february 1968. co. of 198th awarded presidential unit citation heroic efforts in battle of lo giang, 8 february 1968.

the americal division became notorious after platoon of troops division led lieutenant william calley slaughtered hundreds of south vietnamese civilians in lai massacre in march 1968. helicopter crew division s 123rd aviation battalion, led hugh thompson, jr., attempted intervene in massacre , later awarded soldier s medal. seymour hersh broke story of massacre in november 1969, , year later 14 officers – including samuel w. koster, division s commanding officer – charged covering massacre up. of charges later dropped, koster subsequently demoted , stripped of distinguished service medal.


the 198th , 11th brigades withdrawn vietnam in november 1971, , division inactivated. 196th brigade reconstituted separate brigade , remained in vietnam until 29 june 1972, last major combat unit withdrawn. 3rd battalion, 21st infantry (gimlets) last u.s. maneuver battalion leave vietnam, on 23 august 1972.
