for millennia, land known kansas inhabited native americans. in 1803, of modern kansas secured united states part of louisiana purchase. in 1854, kansas territory organized, in 1861 kansas became 34th u.s. state. in 1867, rice county founded.


little river founded in 1880. town named situation upon little arkansas river.


in 1878, atchison, topeka , santa fe railway , parties marion , mcpherson counties chartered marion , mcpherson railway company. in 1879, branch line built florence mcpherson; in 1880 extended lyons , in 1881 extended ellinwood. line leased , operated atchison, topeka , santa fe railway. line florence marion, abandoned in 1968. in 1992, line marion mcpherson sold central kansas railway. in 1993, after heavy flood damage, line marion mcpherson abandoned. original branch line connected florence, marion, canada, hillsboro, lehigh, canton, galva, mcpherson, conway, windom, little river, mitchell, lyons, chase , ellinwood.
