rivington chapelry in ancient ecclesiastical parish of bolton le moors until became parish in own right. rivington church built on site of earlier chapel named in deed margaret pilkington , son robert in 1476. chapelry covered rivington , surrounding areas of anglezarke, hemshaws , foulds. in 1628 chapel built upon little toft , quillet of land local population , divine service celebrated many years of antiquity . early-16th century chapel rebuilt in 1666 , altered , restored in 1861. church small plain building built in sandstone bell turret. anglican church , unusual in not dedicated saint or martyr, referred rivington church.


rivington unitarian chapel built bellcote of local stone in 1703. founded presbyterian church , became unitarian in late 18th century. chapel, retains box pews, restored in 1990. both places of worship listed buildings , have active congregations.
