auburn traveled starkville kick off sec season thursday night tilt bulldogs. in back-and-forth game, tigers pulled out 17–14 victory when state s late attempt tie or perhaps win game failed. cameron newton followed debut going 11/19 138 yards , 2 passing tds. showed off running ability once again gaining 70 yards on ground on 18 carries. newton auburn s leading rusher second straight week. sophomore onterio mccalebb added 68 yards tigers. auburn defense looked improved week 1 game arkansas state , kept bulldogs in check of night. dt nick fairley led charge on defense. recovered fumble, intercepted pass, , had 1 ½ sacks. fairley rewarded performance being named sec defensive player of week.
