he regular in 1973–74 side battled against relegation third division. following season saw vale push promotion under roy sproson s stewardship, ray williams, brian horton , new signing terry bailey providing 41 goals between them. unable establish himself in new set-up, mountford joined fourth division strugglers scunthorpe united on one-month loan in october 1974. december joined crewe alexandra, side failing find net. made 5 appearances alex before being sold walter joyce s rochdale £2,000 later in month.


the big, bustling, old fashioned, centre forward in element @ spotland. 1975–76 , 1976–77 seasons spent in mid-table obscurity in basement division, 41 goals in 117 games, mountford sensation club.


he moved on huddersfield town in september 1977 £10,000, struggled injuries @ leeds road. 1977–78 season saw terriers performing comfortably in fourth division under tom johnston s stewardship, rochdale missed mountford s goals – finished bottom 24 points , 43 goals scored.


in 1978, joined george kirby s halifax town, club @ foot of football league. 1978–79 , 1979–80 seasons difficult, mountford bagging eleven goals 62 league games.


in 1980, joined tony waddington s crewe alexandra on permanent basis, played 3 games before joining stockport county later in year. scored 3 goals in 9 league games jimmy mcguigan s hatters during 1980–81 season.
