on summit kalmithaus, hut managed palatine forest club @ weekends , public holidays. there weather station , free-standing, steel-framed radio tower, kalmit transmitter (sender kalmit).

after 1868 viewing tower on exposed summit had collapsed, in 1928/29 new 21-metre-high observation tower built palatine forest club, which, outset fitted living accommodation, electric light , running water. tower there comprehensive panoramic view not took in entire palatine forest , vosges south, also, on clear days, ranges of hunsrück, taunus, odenwald , black forest. according contemporary sources, kalmit beautiful viewing mountain in palatinate . since then, in , around tower, various survey , radio-technical facilities have been added periodically , placed out of bounds public.

the kalmit transmitter used broadcast rpr1 103.6 mhz , bigfm 106.7 mhz radio stations. amateur radio hams use height , location of kalmit. branch of german amateur radio club, ortsverband z22, erected relay station on summit call sign, db0xk, authorized on 30 november 1971 present-day federal network agency frequency of 145.700 mhz. amateur radio relay housed in tower next kalmithaus.


visibility measuring station

since 2012 there has been special facility on kalmit measuring visibility; task record visibility in palatine forest-north vosges biosphere reserve. whilst @ many, unmanned, weather stations, visibility measurements made automatically range 0 10 km relevant traffic safety, measurement station on kalmit designed range 10 390 km, relevant in assessing fine dust content of air. measurements , survey photographs obtainable through fern-sehen project (projekt fern-sehen) in palatine forest, managed house of sustainability in johanniskreuz, department of rhineland-palatinate state forestry commission. feature values introduced alert nature lovers, because exceptional visibility rare , difficult forecast.

the summit has view of rhine plain, on 500 m below, nearby villages of maikammer , st. martin. there views of cities of ludwigshafen, mannheim on plain , of speyer , philippsburg. in far distance, southwestern part of odenwald forest near heidelberg , first foothills of northern black forest may made out.


schwetzingen castle, 36 kilometres away, west-southwest of kalmit.


to north-northwest, 36 kilometres distant, highest summit in palatinate, 686.5 m high donnersberg in north palatine uplands.
