steiner participated in 1998 , 1999 european junior championships, , 2000 junior world championships.


at 2000 european junior championships in rijeka, croatia came in 8th place in 94 kg category, total of 320 kg (142.5 kg snatch , 177.5 kg clean , jerk).


at 2001 european junior championships in kalmar, sweden won bronze in −105 kg category, 360 kg (165 kg , 195 kg). @ time competed ac woge bregenz weightlifting club. @ 2002 european junior championships in havířov, czech republic won bronze again in −105 kg category, 380 kg (172.5 kg , 207.5 kg).


steiner won austrian national championships in +105 kg category in 2002 total of 370 kg, , in 2003 total of 390 kg.

2004

he won 2004 austrian national championships in +105 kg category total of 400 kg.


steiner continued increase performance; @ 2004 olympic games in athens competed austria, , lifted 405 kg (182.5 kg , 222.5 kg) , went 7th place in -105 kg category.


2005

steiner won 2005 austrian national championships in +105 kg category total of 382.5 kg.


until 2005 competed regularly in world championships , european championships austria. in 2005, austrian national coach replaced against steiners will, caused tension between steiner , austrian weightlifting federation. kept coach personal coach, did not accredited 2005 european championships in sofia.


steiner no longer keep body weight below 105 kilograms (231 lb), , bulked +105 kg category. 2005 european championships first event in new weight category.


at european championships, lot went wrong , steiner failed 3 snatch attempts. had compete in b-group, because european weightlifting federation did not accept announced starting weights. after warming disagreed national coach concerning starting weight, , time ran out on first attempt. austrian national coach, other functionaries, accused steiner of deliberate failure, steiner denied. consequence, left austrian weightlifting federation.


2006–2007

during 3 years steiner applied german citizenship, not allowed compete in international competitions. @ 2007 european championships co-commentator marc huster eurosport. since moving germany competes chemnitzer ac weightlifting club, , team captain in german weightlifting league. steiner trains in german federal weightlifting center in leimen near heidelberg, german national coach frank mantek.

2008

steiner received german citizenship in 2008, , started compete internationally again, germany. on 23 january won beijing pre-olympic tournament total of 423 kg.


at 2008 european championships in lignano sabbiadoro, italy in on 105 kg category lifter snatch 200 kg, winning gold. in clean , jerk won bronze personal best of 246 kg. 6 attempts successful. total result of 446 kg won overall silver behind viktors Ščerbatihs latvia, lifted 447 kg.


the biggest success of steiner s career came in august 2008, when won gold medal @ 2008 summer olympics. after world record holder hossein rezazadeh had retired in july 2008, event turned close competition between steiner, evgeny chigishev, , tournament favorite, european , world champion viktors Ščerbatihs.


during olympic competition, steiner failed in third snatch attempt, , 203 kg ranked fourth after snatch. Ščerbatihs in position take lead in clean , jerk, failed in second attempt. steiner failed in first clean , jerk attempt, , chigishev took lead 250 kg in clean , jerk. Ščerbatihs failed in third attempt, have forced steiner increase last attempt 258 kg in order win gold. successful clean , jerk of 258 kg, , total of 461 kg, steiner became olympic gold medalist.


steiner stood on medalists podium photo of late wife, otherwise have accompanied him games.


2009–2015

in january 2009, steiner operated on inguinal hernia. had pull out of competing @ 2009 arnold sports festival in march, nevertheless part of german delegation @ event , met arnold schwarzenegger.


at 2009 german championships ranked second in snatch behind almir velagic, , won overall total of 430 kg.


at 2010 european championships ranked third total of 426 kg.


in 2012 london olympics weightlifting competition steiner injured during snatch portion of competition when attempted pull 196 kg hit in neck barbell. while not hurt, steiner had abandon competition result of injury. announced retirement competitive weightlifting in march 2013.


steiner participated in season 8 of german tv dance show let s dance, finishing third.
