history
establishment

the club founded taj ahvaz football club hakim shoushtari in 1948. club 1 of taj tehran branches @ time. beginning taj ahvaz able attract of best players of khuzestan.


before 1970

before 1970s, iran did not have official national football league. clubs participated in championships of city or province. in addition taj ahvaz played in khuzestan premier league until 1970.


1970s

in 1970, local league created. league included teams iran in different qualifying tournaments. taj ahvaz finished first in group of qualifying tournament. after losing semifinal, taj ahvaz defeated javanan isfahan 2–0 in third-place match.


the club participated in 1971–72 local league season. taj ahvaz missed again qualification final stage after defeating 0–2 sepahan in semifinal of qualifying tournament. once again, achieved third place after 2–1 win on tractor sazi.


in 1972, takht jamshid cup founded national league , included teams on country. although taj ahvaz promoted takht jamshid cup in 1973, club had play in khuzestan premier league anymore. reason therefore rule iran football federation. allowed 1 team of same name participate in league @ time. taj tehran played in league already.


1979 revolution

after islamic revolution in iran, taj ahvaz changed name esteghlal ahvaz football club. esteghlal means independence in persian. after revolution, sign of previous monarchist regime not tolerated.


1980s , 1990s

due revolution , iran–iraq war, takht jamshid cup dissolved , lower leagues unorganized. war hit ahvaz , khuzestan hard. consequently people paid little attention club , football in general @ time. in 1989 qods league created national football league, esteghlal ahvaz did not participate.


in 1991 azadegan league formed top flight of iranian football. esteghlal ahvaz played 8 years in league average results. after finished 13th in 1997–98 azadegan league season, esteghlal ahvaz relegated iran football s 2nd division.


2000s

after iran pro league established professional football league of iran, azadegan league declared second-highest professional league in iranian football league system. esteghlal ahvaz won 2001–02 azadegan league season , promoted iran pro league.


due investment ali shafizadeh, chairman of club between 2002 , 2006, esteghlal ahvaz had team , remained in iran pro league. grown in following years , finished eighth in 2003–04 iran pro league season , fifth 1 season later.


after achieved 12th place in 2005–06 iran pro league, esteghlal ahvaz finished runners-up in 2006–07 season. continued average team in seasons 2007–08 , 2008–09.


weak years

based on weak performance during 2009–10 iran pro league, esteghlal ahvaz finished 18th , relegated azadegan league. 1 year later relegated again due lot of instability in 2010–11 azadegan league finished 13th. esteghlal ahvaz returned azadegan league in 2012. won 2011–12 iran 2nd division after 4–3 win on pas novin hamedan. prior this, finished first in group.


past on 2 average seasons, esteghlal ahvaz relegated again league 2. lost play-off match against shahrdari tabriz 3–3 on aggregate due away goals.


promotion , relegation

although esteghlal ahvaz relegated league 2, able play in 2015-16 persian gulf pro league. licence foolad novin, promoted. foolad novin not promote persian gulf pro league reserve side of foolad khuzestan. team mismanaged , relegated azadegan league several games before end of season.


because of poor performance in 2016–17 azadegan league season, esteghlal ahvaz relegated league 2 without winning single match.
