the football team has won 8 conference championships. while member of southern conference, w&m champions or co-champions in 1942, 1947, 1966, , 1970. in 1960s, future willis group holdings chairman & ceo joe plumeri played on football team on scholarship halfback lou holtz. after joining yankee conference, tribe won mid-atlantic division in 1993 , won conference championship in 1996. after yankee conference s 1997 merger a-10 conference, tribe co-champions in 2001 , 2004. after colonial athletic association began sponsoring football 2007 season, tribe co-champions in 2010.


the 2004 season saw william & mary reach division i-aa national semi-finals before falling rival james madison university.


in 2008, tribe played richmond, @ home, on last game of season. while richmond assured of berth in playoffs, having played , won game due 12-game schedule year (tribe played 11 games), tribe entered game needing win secure playoff spot. william & mary trailed 14 points going 4th quarter made huge comeback (largely due derek cox) send game overtime. tribe lost in overtime after richmond blocked field goal attempt during tribe s possession, kicked successful field goal during possession. failing beat spiders william & mary missed playoffs. richmond, however, go on win ncaa division football championship defeating eastern kentucky, appalachian state, northern iowa, , university of montana 24–7 in national championship game in chattanooga, tennessee.


in 2009, tribe played virginia cavaliers (uva), in season opening match-up both schools in charlottesville first time since 1986. tribe upset virginia 26–14. second tribe win on virginia in many tries , mirrored several other recent wins caa (fcs) programs on in acc (fbs), including 3 richmond on duke (2006, 2009, 2011). tribe finished year 11-3, after run national semifinals ended 14-13 loss caa rival , eventual champion villanova.
