amazon launched amazon web services (aws) in 2002, provides programmatic access latent features on website.


in november 2005, amazon began testing amazon mechanical turk, application programming interface (api) allowing programs dispatch tasks human processors.


in march 2006, amazon launched online storage service called amazon simple storage service (amazon s3). unlimited number of data objects, 1 byte 5 terabytes in size, can stored in s3 , distributed via http or bittorrent. service charges monthly fees data stored , transferred. in 2006, amazon introduced amazon simple queue service (amazon sqs), distributed queue messaging service, , product wikis (later folded amapedia) , discussion forums products using guidelines follow standard message board conventions.


also in 2006, amazon introduced amazon elastic compute cloud (amazon ec2), virtual site farm, allowing users use amazon infrastructure run applications ranging running simulations web hosting. in 2008, amazon improved service adding elastic block store (ebs), offering persistent storage amazon ec2 instances , elastic ip addresses, , offering static ip addresses designed dynamic cloud computing. amazon introduced simpledb, database system, allowing users of other infrastructure utilize high-reliability, high-performance database system. in 2008, amazon graduated ec2 beta available , added support microsoft windows platform.


amazon continues refine , add services aws, adding such services scalable dns service (amazon route 53), payment handling, , aws specific apis mechanical turk service.


in august 2012, amazon announced amazon glacier, low-cost online file storage web service provides reliable data archiving, storage, , backup.


in november 2012 @ aws web developer conference in las vegas announced targeting large companies cloud storage clients. further cut s3 prices customers long-term contracts in redshift storage service launching in 2013.


in march 2013 amazon announced mobile ads api developers. new ads api can used on apps distributed on android platform long app available on amazon’s appstore.


as of december 2014, amazon web services operated 1.4 million servers across 11 regions , 28 availability zones.
