satyajit ray filmed 2 of premchand s works– sadgati , shatranj ke khiladi. sadgati (salvation) short story revolving around poor dukhi, dies of exhaustion while hewing wood paltry favour. shatranj ke khiladi (the chess players) revolved around decadence of nawabi lucknow, obsession game consumes players, making them oblivious of responsibilities in midst of crisis.


sevasadanam (first published in 1918) made film m.s. subbulakshmi in lead role. novel set in varanasi, holy city of hindus. sevasadan ( house of service ) institute built daughters of courtesans. lead of novel beautiful, intelligent , talented girl called suman. belongs high caste. married older, tyrannical man. realises loveless marriage prostitution except there 1 client. bholi, courtesan, lives opposite suman. suman realises bholi outside purdah , while inside . suman leaves husband , becomes successful entertainer of gentlemen. after brief period of success, ends victim of political drama played out self-righteous hindu social reformers , moralists.


the actor factor theatre company, young delhi based theatre group, staged kafan in 2010 in new delhi. original stage adaptation of premchand s short story. kafan dark comedy. in play, puppetry explored depict tussle between 2 classes , plight of budhia, caught in crossfire. bleakness of hope in story , awfulness of father-son duo find delicate balance. @ times situations break morbid humour. in end wine-house becomes stage ghisu (father) , madhav s (son) rebellious dance, defying not laws of land of gods.
