in united states, lyceum movement demonstrated need of libraries conserve results of work. itinerating libraries , county system of traveling libraries proposed 1831. in 1848, american seaman s friend society began furnish libraries american ships, afterward extending work naval hospitals , life-saving stations. united states government has supplied similar libraries lighthouses. these exchanged frequently. first general american traveling libraries supported public funds authorized new york state legislature in 1892. first library sent out new york state library, , created in part melvil dewey, in february 1893. beginning 10 libraries of 100 volumes each circulation first fiscal year 2,400 volumes. increased in 1918-19 total circulation of 43,958 volumes sent out in 1,099 different collections, total stock of 100,641 volumes. michigan , montana enacted traveling-library legislation in 1895 , wisconsin , iowa in 1896.
