the book part of 4 historiographies of twenty-four histories canon, records of grand historian, book of han , records of 3 kingdoms. fan ye used earlier histories, including accounts sima qian , ban gu, along many others (some had similar names, such han records of eastern lodge various contemporaries throughout 2nd century, , records of later han yuan hong 4th century), of did not survive intact.
the section on treatise on western regions based on report composed ban yong (with few later additions) , presented emperor of han in around 125. presumably includes notes father ban chao. forms 88th chapter (or 118th chapter in editions) of book of later han, , key source cultural , socio-economic data on western regions, including earliest accounts of daqin (the roman empire), , of detailed reports on india , central asia. contains few references events occurring after death of emperor an, including brief account of arrival of first official envoys rome in 166.
fan ye, himself, says new information contained in section on western regions, largely based on information report of ban yong:
ban gu has recorded in detail local conditions , customs of each kingdom in former book [book of han or history of former han dynasty ]. now, reports of jianwu period [25-56] onwards recorded in chapter on western regions differ earlier [ones ban gu]; ban yong s report [presented] @ end of [the reign of] emperor [107-125], , on.
