guérin on occasion publicly crowned president of institute, , went rome study under joseph-benoît suvée. in 1800, unable remain in rome on account of health, went naples, painted grave of amyntas. in 1802 guérin produced phaedra , hippolytus (louvre); in 1810, after return paris, again achieved great success andromache , pyrrhus (louvre); , in same year exhibited cephalus , aurora (louvre) , bonaparte , rebels of cairo (versailles). these paintings suited popular taste of first empire, being highly melodramatic , pompously dignified.
the restoration brought guérin fresh honours; had received first consul in 1803 cross of legion of honour, , in 1815 louis xviii named académie des beaux-arts. style changed accord popular taste. in aeneas relating dido disasters of troy (louvre), guérin adopted more sensuous, picturesque style.

guérin commissioned paint madeleine scene history of st louis, health prevented him accomplishing had begun, , in 1822 accepted post of director of french academy in rome, in 1816 had refused. on returning paris in 1828, guérin, had been made chevalier of order of st. michel, ennobled. attempted complete pyrrhus , priam, work had begun @ rome, in vain; health had broken down, , in hope of improvement returned italy horace vernet. shortly after arrival @ rome baron guérin died, on 6 july 1833, , buried in church of la trinité de monti side of claude lorrain.
