biography
early years

meta schlichting born in milwaukee, wisconsin on february 23, 1873.


she educated @ wisconsin state normal school (now university of wisconsin–milwaukee). taught primary school 3 years before resigning in 1897 marry victor berger.


political career

in 1909, berger elected milwaukee school board. school board member, supported progressive measures such construction of playgrounds, penny lunches , medical exams children. advocated on behalf of teachers, working tenure, fixed-salary schedule , pension system. re-elected in 1915, berger won 3 more times, serving total of 30 years.


in 1917, berger joined milwaukee emergency peace committee, group tried prevent u.s. navy recruiters targeting schoolchildren.


her work school board led appointments wisconsin state board of education, wisconsin board of regents of normal schools , university of wisconsin board of regents.


after husbands death in 1929, berger selected fill seat on socialist party s national executive committee. bergers spent of 1920s traveling in asia , germany. after victor s death in 1929, berger s relationship socialist party grew strained, , resigned in 1940.


death , legacy

she died @ thiensville farm on june 16, 1944. interred in forest home cemetery in milwaukee.
