indian architecture consists of production of indian subcontinent encompasses multitude of expressions on space , time, transformed forces of history considered unique sub-continent, destroying, of time absorbing. result evolving range of architectural production nonetheless retains amount of continuity across history.

with advent of islam, arch , dome began used , mosque or masjid began form part of landscape, adding new experience in form , space. famous islamic building type in india tomb or mausoleum evolved basic cube , hemisphere vocabulary of phase more elaborate form during mughal era multiple chambers present , tombs set in garden known char-bagh. known examples gol gumbaz, bijapur , taj mahal, agra, latter renowned beauty in white marble, minarets , setting. colonisation, new chapter began. though dutch, portuguese , french made substantial forays, english had lasting impact. architecture of colonial period varied beginning attempts @ creating authority through classical prototypes later approach of producing supposedly more responsive image through termed indo-saracenic architecture- mixture of hindu, islamic , western elements.


with introduction of modern architecture india , later independence, quest more towards progress paradigm fuelled nehruvian visions. planning of chandigarh- city architects hate/love- le corbusier considered step towards this. later modernism exhausted in west , new directions sought for, in india there search more meaningful architecture rooted in indian context. direction called critical regionalism exemplified in works of architects such b. v. doshi, charles correa, etc. apart this, advent of globalisation , economic development since 90s, has spawned impressive collection of modern campuses , skyscrapers, , economic reform accelerates, metropolitan areas gaining futuristic skylines.
