one of reduced versions of christus consolator(the major work today found in van gogh-museum, amsterdam), lost 70 years, rediscovered in janitor s closet in gethsemane lutheran church in dassel, minnesota in 2007. has been restored , on display @ minneapolis institute of arts.

scheffer accomplished portrait painter, finishing 500 portraits in total. subjects included composers frédéric chopin , franz liszt, marquis de la fayette, pierre-jean de béranger, alphonse de lamartine, charles dickens, duchess de broglie, talleyrand , queen marie amélie.


after 1846, ceased exhibit. strong ties royal family caused him fall out of favour when, in 1848, second republic came being. scheffer made commander of legion of honour in 1848, is, after had wholly withdrawn salon. shut in studio, produced many paintings exhibited after death in 1858.


the works first exhibited posthumously include sorrows of earth, , angel announcing resurrection, had left unfinished. time of death, reputation damaged: though paintings praised charm , facility, condemned poor use of color , vapid sentiment.
