the country has total area of 1,246,690 square kilometres (481,351 sq mi), , population of 19 million. christianity religion of vast majority of population, catholicism largest single religious group. catholic church estimates 55 percent of population catholic. data national institute religious affairs (inar), under ministry of culture, indicate major protestant traditions, including methodists, baptists, congregationalists (united church of christ), , assemblies of god, present in country declining in strength, estimated membership of 10 percent of population. african christian denominations gaining membership , 25 percent of population believed followers. 5 percent believed belong various evangelical churches, of them of brazilian origin. small portion of rural population practices animism or traditional indigenous religions. there small muslim community, estimated @ 80-90,000 adherents, composed largely of migrants west africa , families of lebanese extraction. there few declared atheists in country. traditional african religions adhered few peripheral rural societies only, traditional beliefs held many people.


foreign missionaries have operated freely throughout country since independence. during last colonial decades, protestant missionaries have been subject limitations.
