in 1878, atchison, topeka , santa fe railway , parties marion county , mcpherson county chartered marion , mcpherson railway company. in 1879, branch line built florence mcpherson, in 1880 extended lyons, in 1881 extended ellinwood. line leased , operated atchison, topeka , santa fe railway. line florence marion, abandoned in 1968. in 1992, line marion mcpherson sold central kansas railway. in 1993, after heavy flood damage, line marion mcpherson abandoned. original branch line connected florence, marion, canada, hillsboro, lehigh, canton, galva, mcpherson, conway, windom, little river, mitchell, lyons, chase, ellinwood.
lyons incorporated city in 1880, same year railroad built through it.
in 1890, western salt company put down first shaft mine salt in lyons.
in 1970s federal government interested in using local site burial of high-level nuclear waste.
