in may 2010 city of paris expressed concern on growing number of love-locks on pont des arts, passerelle léopold-sédar-senghor, , pont de l archevêché bridges, stating: raise problems preservation of our architectural heritage . lovelocks of pont des arts disappeared during night of 11 may 2010; had been removed student of nearby École des beaux-arts make sculpture. love locks began appearing on pont de l archevêché , have since spread @ least 11 seine bridges, canal saint martin footbridges, , parks , monuments on city. many tourists mistakenly believe longstanding parisian tradition, not realizing practice migrated paris in late 2008 after affecting cities in italy , asia.
in january 2014, campaign , petition, no love locks™, founded 2 americans living in paris in effort save city s historic bridges , monuments overwhelming number of locks. international media attention campaign received has been credited actions begun in summer , fall of 2014, when city began seeking alternatives love locks , asking public stop placing locks on parisian bridges , monuments. on 9 may 2014, weight of padlocks on pont des arts bridge blamed collapse of part of parapet. city began experiment in september 2014 on pont des arts, replacing 3 panels special type of glass prevent locks being attached. on 1 june 2015, locks taken down due collapsing of bridge.
