building , grounds

the house located on north side of west bleeker between north third , north fourth streets in aspen s residential west end. main street (state highway 82) block south, , commercial areas of downtown several blocks east. terrain flat, aspen mountain rising abruptly , steeply 2 blocks south.


the lot occupies entire southern half of block below alley midway between , west hallam street north. eastern section landscaped area mature cottonwood trees , curving walkways. house sits in western portion of property, near middle of frontage.


exterior

it one-and-a-half-story brick structure, 3 bays two, topped shingled mansard roof. behind main block smaller rear addition. long rectangular section projects west rear addition, putting house on north , east of swimming pool. along front original iron fence , line of tall mature mixed evergreen , deciduous trees.


the south (front) facade has 2 projecting polygonal bays double-hung one-over-one sash windows, flanking main entrance, double wooden doors reached low, wide semicircular brick steps. pioneer park written on glass transom. above brick course connecting brick arches above windows , transom; complemented course @ base.



above bracketed cornice roof flares slightly, creating overhanging eaves. 3 pedimented dormer windows double-hung one-over-one sash pierce steep face of mansard roof on upper story; central 1 additionally set in projecting trapezoid. above windows flat roof peaks in center. on east , west sides fenestration consists of 3 narrow windows on sides wider window in center, same one-over-one double-hung sash front windows. there 2 dormers on faces. in rear two-story kitchen wing one-story clapboard-sided timber frame addition on west.


interior

wide semicircular brick steps rise main entrance, consisting of paneled double doors set etched glass windows. open interior abounds in original black walnut woodwork. used doors, door , window surrounds, baseboards , stairway. unusually, used upstairs.


all rooms on first floor have high ceilings, doors reaching them. east living room, ceiling has wide molding , plaster medallion in center chandelier hangs. in wall carved marble fireplace. opposite room used either library or parlor. fireplace has painted wooden surround. carved panels on face have abstract design; brackets support mantelpiece.


outbuildings

there several outbuildings. garage sits next house. in northeast corner wooden octagonal summer house. carriage house, outbuilding considered contributing property s historic character, similar in appearance main house. located on west, facing north fourth street @ alley, several small brick additions on side.
